Ireland goes even greener………..
Ireland has long been identified as ‘green’ for its rolling hills and forty shades of green countryside, however, Ireland is now focusing on becoming greener in terms of developing its ecotourism product.
This has led to the development of the ‘Greenbox’, Ireland’s first integrated ecotourism destination, with the area of the Greenbox including Counties Fermanagh, Leitrim, West Cavan, North Sligo, South Donegal and North West Monaghan.
Greenbox Ltd is a cross border organisation in the Northwest of Ireland that has been set up to stimulate the development of ecotourism in the region. The region, which was once overshadowed by conflict, is now one of the most peaceful places in Ireland and nine years on from a peace agreement (The Belfast Agreement) the destination is in an ideal position to welcome tourists to visit.
The geographic area is surrounded by water on all sides by the Shannon Erne Waterway, Lough Erne and The Atlantic Ocean. The unspoilt nature of the Greenbox has contributed to attracting a high concentration of “green” and ecotourism operators to the region.
A range of eco breaks have been put together where you can immerse yourself in local culture, heritage and nature. Adrenalin junkies, creative types or those who just want to escape, enjoy bypassing the tourist trail to get away for a truly unique eco experience. The experiences in the Greenbox range from a quirky tour called the PILGRIM’S PROGRESS to discovering how your distant ancestors lived on the amazing Wilderness Therapy Session weekend hosted by the Lough Allen Adventure Centre.
There are also some interesting accommodation options such as The Gyreum, Ireland’s first ecolodge, a 100ft wide wooden Christmas-pudding shaped ring fort, a green and discreet hobbit-like edifice overlooking Lough Arrow in rural south Sligo. It’s aligned to 3 solar events pointing toward the megalithic cairns of Moytura, Carrowkeel and Queen Maeve’s on top of Knocknarae. Another gem is the Ard Nahoo Health Farm and ecocabins which are constructed from all natural products www.ardnahoo.com. There are also wonderful organic food country markets all over this region.
All products are listed on the Greenbox website – www.greenbox.ie
