Unique co-operation to follow in the steps of extraordinary 16th century artist through four Italian regions and six municipalities from Romagna to Marche

A fascinating new opportunity has been unveiled in London by a team including the mayor of Rimini, director of Tuscany Tourism, famous art historian Andrew Graham Dixon, Booker Prize author Ali Smith and James Bradburne, director of Florence’s Palazzo Strozzi.

The trail will follow one of the world’s seminal artists travelling through the landscape that inspired him, little changed since his time in the 16th century.

Piero della Francesca was one of the greatest artists the world has seen and his beguiling dreamlike work has inspired even modern artists such as Picasso, Henry Moore and Salvadore Dali.

Through this new co-operation involving the Italian regions of  Emilio Romagna, Tuscany, Marche and Umbria, and the cities of Rimini, Urbino, Sansepolcro, Monterchi, Arezzo and Perugia – tourists now have the opportunity to follow in the trail of this master, view both his extraordinary work and travel through stunning countryside.

There are a range of routes starting in Rimini and the Montefeltro area, renowned for its breathtaking hills, castles and strongholds such as San Leo and Urbino. The itineraries then lead through the beautiful landscape of the Tuscan part of the Valtiberina, passing through Sansepolcro, Monterchi and Anghiari en route. They continue as far as Arezzo and follow the Tiber river to Perugia.

Along the route, visitors can enjoy the traditional craftsmanship, stunning sites and sensational food such as quintessentially Romagnolo Piadina flatbread, Chianina beef, Tuscan bread soups (such as Panzanella, , Ribollota, and Aquacotta), Squacquerone and Casciotta di Urbino cheeses, and traditional Umbrian legume soups. Naturally in each area there are amazing local wines to pair with the local food specialities.

Visitors will also have the opportunity to enjoy Piero’s balconies in the Montefeltro area and see the landscapes that feature in the paintings at first hand, amazingly largely unchanged.

Here it is possible to see the background of the world-famous paintings of the "Portraits of the Duke and Duchess of Urbino". Another balcony nearby towards the sea forms the backdrop to ‘Saint Jerome and a Donor". Pieve del Colle form the landscapes for "The Truimphs".
