Jamaica extends state of emergency in tourist areas
Jamaica has extended a state of emergency, which covers the popular tourist areas of Montego Bay and Negril, until mid August.
The state of emergency covers the parishes of St James, which includes Montego Bay (above), Hanover and Westmoreland, which includes Negril.
It was introduced in May, initially just for 14 days, following a rise in serious crimes, including murders.
A separate state of emergency is also in place in part of the parish of St Andrew, which includes areas of the capital, Kington, until July 21.
The UK Foreign Office said: "Both the State of Emergency and ZOSO measures allow the military to support the police in joint security operations in response to recent violence and shooting incidents.
"Security operations are ongoing and further activity including curfews could occur with little or no notice. You should exercise caution if you’re in the area, particularly if travelling at night, and follow the advice of the local authorities, including any restrictions.
"These may also result in road closures or travel delays, and the operating~hours of some businesses may be subject to change."
SOEs have been used before in Jamaica, with the last declared in St James in January 2018, which was credited with a 70% reduction in murders in the parish during 2018 compared to 2017 when 335 people were killed.
SOEs were also imposed in St Catherine North and sections of the Corporate Area in March and September last year respectively.
