Jamaica sprinting ahead with sports tourism initiative
Caribbean island Jamaica has launched a campaign to develop sports tourism, leveraging its dominance in track and field athletics.
‘JAMAICA Sport’ has been launched by tourism officials to sustainably develop sports tourism and promote local and international sports events.
Referring to Jamaica’s standing in the athletics world, minister of tourism and entertainment, the Hon. Dr. Wykeham McNeill said ‘now is the time to capitalize on this potential.’
Jamaicans have dominated sprint events in recent years, with Usain Bolt and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce leading the way.
"We are committed to ensuring that all areas that complement our growing tourism industry are tapped to reap maximum benefits and this forms part of our ongoing effort to diversify our tourism product," minister McNeill said.
JAMAICA Sport will be chaired by Christopher Dehring who was CEO of the ICC Cricket World Cup held in the Caribbean in 2007.
The new entity has been welcomed by the Jamaica Hotel and Tourist Association and other tourism stakeholders.
