Japan adding thousands of free Wi-Fi spots for tourists

Thursday, 02 Jan, 2017 0
Japan has pledged to add 30,000 free Wi-Fi hotspots for tourists ahead of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

By increasing connectivity, authorities will be able to improve monitoring of tourists’ movements and provide assistance during natural disasters or other disruptions, the affairs and communications ministry said.

Ministry Chief Official Go Katsuhata said it has already installed 14,000 hotspots.

The project will provide Wi-Fi access at many museums and national parks and all will be free for public use.

Tied to the project is an aim to better collate traveller behaviour and demographics for use in future tourism promotional campaigns.
