Jet Airways scraps Singapore flights, fleet reduced to just 14 aircraft
Cash-strapped Jet Airways is fast running out of international routes and planes, as a number of investors home in on a majority stake in the airline.
The latest international route to bite the dust is Singapore.
In a Facebook post, Changi Airport said flights to and from Singapore are suspended ‘until further notice.’
"Passengers are advised to contact their booking agent or the airline directly for available options."
At one point Jet operated nine flights a day to Singapore but this had dwindled to just two since last month as the airline battles to stay afloat.
From a fleet that once numbered about 120, it is now down to just 14 flying aircraft, due to missed payments to lessors.
India’s aviation regulator DGCA could intervene and halt all international services if they continue to shrink.
Under DGCA rules, airlines must have a minimum fleet size of 20 aircraft before they are permitted to serve international routes.
The regulator said it is monitoring the situation.
"We will not allow violation of safety but since state Bank of India is in the process of reviving the airline, the issue of not operating minimum fleet can be taken up later," said a DGCA official.
