JetBlue-backed startup to buy up to 100 hybrid electric jets
JetBlue-backed aviation startup JetSuite has sealed a deal to become the launch customer of Zunum Aero’s new hybrid electric small jets.
JetSuite will order 100 of the planes which have a hybrid-electric range of 700 miles and cut emissions and noise by 80%.
The jets will seat up to 12 passengers and have a maximum cruising speed of 340 miles, according to Zenum.
The hybrid planes will undergo flight tests next year and are expected to be delivered to JetSuite in 2022.
"We share Zunum’s vision for hybrid to electric aviation. With this partnership, we expect to bring ever more efficient and environmentally friendly aviation solutions to our private and semi-private jet customers," said JetSuite founder and CEO Alex Wilcox.
Zunum says there is little real completion in the short range jet market and operational costs are about 8 cents per seat mile.
JetSuite offers private charter flights and a semi-private scheduled service option having agreed a codesharing alliance with JetBlue via its subsidiary JetSuiteX.
JetSuite also recently received financial backing from Boeing.
