JetBlue tightens emotional support pet policy

Friday, 06 Jun, 2018 0

JetBlue Airways is the latest US carrier to update its emotional support animal policy with strictest rules coming next month.

It will only accept dogs, cats and miniature horses.

The new policy comes into effect on July 1 and follows new stricter rules across the airline industry from the likes of American Airlines, United Airlines and Delta Air Lines.

Another change in JetBlue policy is the potential liability for owners of boisterous pets.

Emotional support animal owners must sign a document accepting responsibility for injuries or property damage caused by the animal’s behaviour.

They are also required to notify the airline 48 hours in advance and produce a note from a veterinarian confirming the animal’s ‘fitness to fly.’

There is no change to JetBlue existing policy for trained service animals such as guide dogs for the blind.

Changes were necessary to address ‘a dramatic increase in industry incidents involving emotional support animals that haven’t been adequately trained,’ the carrier said in a statement.
