Jetstar cracking down on carry-ons

Wednesday, 29 Oct, 2014 0

Jetstar is cracking down on carry-on bags, reducing the permitted free allowance from 10kg to just 7kg per passenger.

The new limit will apply to all domestic and international flights booked from today.

It follows the introduction of a trial programme of cabin baggage officers deployed at Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Cairns and Gold Coast airports to keep a watchful eye on hefty carry-on bag violations.

A $50 fee is payable for bags exceeding the weight and height limits for domestic flights and checked in at the gate, and $160 is charged on international flights.

The carrier says the changes are in response to customer complaints bemoaning lack of space in the overhead lockers.

"Ultimately, the introduction of the cabin baggage officers and the carry-on policy change are both working toward the same goal. They’re about ensuring everyone gets their fair allocation of overhead locker space as well as enabling us to board flights as safely and efficiently as possible," Jetstar said in a statement.

The reduction in baggage allowance brings Jetstar in line with rivals Qantas and Virgin Australia, which both have a 7kg limit, although Qantas permits two carry-on bags at up to 7kg each on domestic flights.
