JFK admits major security breach
Passengers managed to slip through New York’s JFK airport without being screened in a major security breach this week.
All 11 were all allowed to board flights even though neither they nor their carry on bags had been screened.
According to a report in the New York Daily News, they had gone through a security lane which has been left unattended early on Monday morning.
Of the 11, three set off metal detector alarms.
Three passengers were later identified from CCTV footage and were tracked down onboard a flight to California.
The TSA, which is the agency responsible for airport security, then ‘conducted security measures’ at the destination, a spokesman told reporters.
"We are confident this incident presents minimal risk to the aviation transportation system. Once our review is complete, TSA will take appropriate action," he added.
However, senator Charles Schumer had some harsh words for the agency.
"This security breach is inexcusable. To have people go through the security lines unchecked, and then for TSA not to alert the Port Authority for two hours — can you imagine what could happen within two hours? The TSA has to tighten things up."
