JFK screener accused of stealing $80,000

A screener at JFK Airport in New York City was charged with grand larceny and possession of stolen property after he allegedly stole $80,000 from a passenger’s suitcase.

Prosecutors said federal screener Frank Ulerio Jr., took the cash from the suitcase of a passengers from Astoria, Queens on his way to Pakistan.

The victim discovered the theft when he landed in Pakistan.

Alerted to the theft, the Transportation Security Administration traced the bag to the screener, who said he used part of the money to pay off a gambling debt.

There was no immediate answer why the passenger was carrying so much money, according to news accounts.

Said Queens District Attorney Richard Brown:

“It is particularly troubling that an individual responsible for ensuring the safety and security of our nation’s airlines and protecting us from terrorism would allegedly engage in such egregious conduct.”
