Kenya travel warning over ‘serious unrest’
British travellers have been urged to avoid all but essential travel to the centres of Mombasa and Nairobi following “serious unrest” in parts of Kenya.
High Commission officials are monitoring the situation in the country and will update travel advice on regular intervals in the wake of riots following presidential elections on Sunday.
At least 200 people are reported to have died in ethnic violence including an attack on a church.
The Foreign Office advised Britons in Kenya to stay indoors, adding: “If you need to travel you should exercise caution and seek advice locally.”
The travel advice update said: “There continues to be serious unrest in parts of Kenya, particularly in urban centres, following the annoucement of the presidential election results.”
Up to 26,000 British tourists visit Kenya every year and the FO said: “We strongly recommend thqat you obtain comprehensive travel and medical insurance before travelling.”
