Kenyan tourist chiefs reassure holidaymakers
Kenyan tourism officials have released maps outlining the safer areas on the Kenyan coast following the recent attack on UK tourists.
David Tebbutt was murdered and his wife Judith Tebbutt kidnapped after they were attacked in their beach hut at the Kimayu Safari village resort by armed bandits on Saturday.
ABTA has called on the trade to help educate holidaymakers in a bid to protect tourism to Kenya.
A statement from the Hon Najib Balala, minister of tourism for Kenya, said that the Kiwayu resort was in a remote location near the Somali border.
“Kiwayu Safari Village is in an isolated location and is the northernmost resort on the Kenya coast, situated 55 kilometres north of the island of Lamu,” it stated.
“The resort can only be reached by boat transfer which takes approximately two and a half hours from Lamu Town or by light-aircraft. The distance between Mombasa and Lamu Town is 350 kilometres; most visitors fly between the two which takes approximately 45 minutes.”
In 2010 over one million tourists visited Kenya globally, of which 174,000 were British.
