Kiwis warned of British travel risk

A report in The Dominion Post says that New Zealanders are being warned to be extra vigilant when travelling in Britain, with the warning following a tense weekend in the UK, with the series of attempted terrorist attacks leaving authorities on high alert.

New Zealand’s Foreign Affairs and Trade Ministry issued its warning yesterday after new British Prime Minister Gordon Brown raised the country’s threat level to “critical” – meaning another terrorist attack could be imminent.

The Ministry said New Zealand travellers should take into account the threat level and they should also monitor the media.

Australia’s Foreign Affairs and Trade Department increased its travel warnings for Britain yesterday to the third highest on its five-scale ranking system.

That put Britain on par with Iran, Guatemala, Jordan, Rwanda and Uzbekistan in terms of the risk and higher than Fiji.

New Zealand’s ministry has a three-level travel warning system but had not applied any level to Britain last night, but would monitor the situation.

Spokesman Peter Rider advised New Zealanders to check the British Home Office website – www.homeoffice.gov.uk/security for updates.
