Korean guides under fire in Phuket
PHUKET –Tourism authorities in Phuket are concerned about the number of Korean tour guides working illegally in the region.
Tourism minister Dr Suwit Yodmanee said he had information from the Tourism Authority of Thailand that there were not enough Thai guides to cater to the large numbers of Korean tourists visiting Phuket.
“I suggest Phuket holds a nationwide campaign to find Thais who speak Korean well. Once we have enough Thai guides to serve the Korean tourist market, I will make sure that Thai guides will be the guides for Korean tourists – not Koreans,” said the minister.
“It is illegal for non-Thais to work as tour guides in Thailand. Phuket must get serious in dealing with this problem.
“Phuket is the top tourism destination in Thailand for Koreans, so they are an important target group of tourists,” the minister added.
