La Manga on course for bookings boom
Spain’s La Manga Club resort is proving more popular than ever among UK golfers with bookings up by more than a third in 2013 on the corresponding period last year.
The five-star venue in Murcia, south-east Spain, has seen a 36% growth in golf break bookings from the UK golf market, helped by a significant increase in packages booked with tour operators.
With facilities including three 18-hole championship courses and a nine-hole academy course, and having hosted the Spanish Open five times, La Manga Club is regarded as one of Europe’s foremost sports destinations.
La Manga Club has been associated with some of the most famous names in golf since opening in 1972 including Gary Player (La Manga Club’s first director of golf), Arnold Palmer (winner of the 1975 Spanish Open and re-designer of its South Course) and the late Severiano Ballesteros – the resort’s touring professional from 1980-85.
Ex-world number one Luke Donald cut his golfing teeth at the resort as a schoolboy and the venue runs a highly regarded golf academy which caters for all ages and abilities throughout the year including school holidays.
In addition to three 18-hole championship courses, La Manga Club includes a 28-court tennis centre and a 2,000sqm spa and fitness centre.
It also offers the choice of a five-star hotel, four-star serviced apartments and townhouses, and more than 20 bars and restaurants.
