Laos strengthens its position as an ‘authentic destination’ at ITB Berlin
Lao New Year is always 14th April
Laos has strengthened its position as a country that offers a wide selection of responsible tourism products for travellers searching for an authentic destination.
Laos is specializing in forms of sustainable tourism that benefit local socio-economic development as well as natural and cultural heritage conservation.
In spite of the global economic crisis, Laos has continued to attract visitors, although the number of annual arrivals is increasing at a slightly slower pace – 7 percent in 2008- compared to the average 15 percent over the last decade.
Visitors to Laos will have a range of opportunities to explore from dramatic mountain ranges, deep ravines, paddy field plains, rainforests and the mighty Mekong River, running the length of the country.
The country’s uncrowded roads and Mekong River cruises create unique opportunities for adventure and its people offer visitors a warm welcome and genuine hospitality.
This landlocked country which borders China, Burma, Cambodia, Vietnam and Thailand is fast developing its infrastructure to attract visitors.
The Lao Association of Travel Agents (LATA) launched two new booklets at ITB Berlin: the LATA Directory of Members 2009/2010 and New Responsible Tourism Products in Laos.
New Responsible Tourism Products in Laos picks up on ITB’s 2009 theme of corporate social responsibility (CSR). The booklet features a selection of new attractions, tours, destinations, cookery and craft courses and ‘voluntourism’ opportunities.
It is supported by the EU Asia Invest II programme ‘Marketing Responsible Tourism in Laos’ and SNV Netherlands Development Organisation.
“Laos has unspoilt nature, a rich cultural heritage and welcoming people. With our sustainable tourism development policy, we are working to keep Laos as a pristine and beautiful destination for travellers to relax and experience the real Indochina" said the leader of the Lao delegation, Mr Soukaseum Bodhisane, Vice Chairman, Lao National Tourism Administration.”
