Late flights getting worse
What are airline passenger’s chances of arriving late?
A little less than one in five, or 17%, says a US Department of Transportation study.
Flight delays in the past year have been the worst since 2000, the study found.
The worst route in the country was AirTran Flight 576 from Atlanta to Newark, which was on time only 72% of the time. That route had the worst record of any in the US in the past year, according to government data.
The three airlines with the lowest overall on-time arrival rates were Alaska Airlines at almost 50%; AirTran Airways at 66.4%; and Atlantic Southeast at 68.6%.
The airline with the highest rate of on-time arrivals: Hawaiian Airlines at 94.1% on time.
Observers blame the tardy arrivals on the nation’s stretched air-traffic control system and bad weather. But another factor is simply so many planes in the crowded skies.
