Lawmakers again call for EpiPens on flights
The Federal Aviation Administration is being called on again to mandate EpiPens on commercial flights.
Senate Democrats Elizabeth Warren and Ed Markey want every flight to be equipped with the life-saving equipment.
The two Senators and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer wrote to the FAA calling for epinephrine auto-injectors to be placed in every plane’s emergency medical box.
EpiPens are used to quickly treat severe allergic reactions such as nut allergies.
“The glaring gap in FAA’s regulations disregards the widely-accepted guidance by medical professionals who stress the importance of epinephrine auto-injectors in treating anaphylaxis,” they wrote.
Some airlines carry the equipment on some aircraft but is not mandatory.
There have been instances of passengers going into shock and being saved by the personal EpiPen of a fellow passenger.
They have been several calls to make them mandatory on aircraft in the past few years.
Life-saving EpiPen doses can be administered easily by those not medically trained.
