Lawyers investigate Sharm hotel following sickness claims
Specialist travel lawyers have launched an investigation into conditions at a resort in Sharm el Sheikh, where there have been several outbreaks of gastric illnesses dating back to 2009.
The probe comes after a holidaymaker from Glasgow claimed he fell ill during a family holiday at the Holiday Village Red Sea resort shortly after arriving on June 19 last year.
Alan Wallace, who had booked his holiday through First Choice, sought treatment from the resort doctor on more than one occasion, according to lawyers Irwin Mitchell, and was twice placed on a drip.
Symptoms continued after he returned home and he lost a stone and a half in weight.
Irwin Mitchell say his complaints echo those made by numerous other guests at the same resort in 2009 and between 2011 and 2013. The firm has already secured settlements for the holidaymakers after discovering they had various serious infections including cryptosporidium, salmonella and shigella.
Specialist international personal injury lawyer Jennifer Mullins, representing the Wallace family, said: "It is important to investigate the conditions at the resort to determine if any lessons can be learnt to reduce the risk of more guests falling ill again at the resort.
"Given the history this resort has in terms of holidaymakers falling ill during their stays, we were very concerned to hear about the gastric illness which Alan contracted during his holiday at the Holiday Village Red Sea resort.
"Following our instruction, we are now commencing our own investigations into the problems that our clients faced and, as part of that, we would be keen to hear from anyone who may have further information about standards and hygiene levels at the resort, who may be able to assist with our investigations."
A spokesman for First Choice said: "We are sorry to hear of Mr Wallace’s experience at the Holiday Village Red Sea resort in Sharm El Sheikh last year.
"As this is now subject to legal proceedings, it would be inappropriate for us to comment further.
"Thomson and First Choice closely audit all resorts to which we operate to ensure that health, hygiene and comfort levels are maintained in line with industry standards."
