Liner hit by giant wave sets sail again
A luxury liner than was damaged by a “huge” freak wave has set sail again after repairs – with dramatic descriptions of how the ship was hit by the 20-metre wall of water. As reported by News From Abroad, the Norwegian Dawn liner was hit by appalling weather as it sailed from the Bahamas to New York over the weekend, with the wave, which “came out of nowhere”, smashing several windows and flooding around 60 cabins. It had to reroute to the US port city of Charleston for repairs but was able to carry on to New York yesterday, arriving at its destination some 24 hours late. The BBC News website quotes one passenger, James Fraley, as saying that he and his wife had started to call their relatives because they thought that the ship was “going down”. He is quoted as saying: “It was pure hell. We are talking 14-metre waves hitting the 10th floor, knocking Jacuzzis on the 12th floor overboard, and people sleeping in hallways in life jackets. Just pure pandemonium.” Passengers, of whom 300 decided not to carry on to New York, have reportedly been given 50 per cent refunds and vouchers for another cruise.
