London 2012 dilemma for UK outbound
The 2012 London Olympics presents a new dilemma for pricing, yield and capacity planning for the outbound tour-operating sector, according to research unveiled at the WTM Vision Conference in London.
No clear picture is emerging about the impact of the Games on domestic and outbound tourism.
The event takes place at the heart of the peak summer season, starting on July 27 and finishing on the August 13.
Another issue is the UEFA Euro 2012 football tournament, which opens on June 8 with the final taking place on July 1.
Traditionally, tour operators experience a drop in bookings and travel during big soccer events, and with the Republic of Ireland also taking part in Euro 2012, chances are more people might be distracted from thinking about a summer break.
The latest increase in APD (Air Passenger Duty), the potential for unrest overseas and the ongoing Eurozone debt crisis are other variables likely to have an impact on outbound demand, says Euromonitor International’s report – The Travel Industry Global Overview.
Reed Travel Exhibitions chairman, World Travel Market, Fiona Jeffery said, “The impact of the global financial uncertainty is still playing its part in the economy and the travel and tourism industry."
WTM Vision Conference series was launched in 2009 in London expanding to Milan and Dubai (at fellow Reed Travel Exhibitions Event Arabian Travel Market) in 2011.
The WTM Vision conferences in 2012 will continue on May 1 in Dubai (at ATM) ԬMay 10 in Shanghai andլMay 18 in Florence
