Los Angeles shaken by 5.3-magnitude quake
Southern California was rattled by its biggest earthquake for several years.
No significant damage has been reported as the epicentre was offshore, although it did generate landslides on Santa Cruz Island.
The 5.3-magnitude quake was centered near the Channel Islands some 85 miles west of Los Angeles.
The tremblor was felt in LA as well as Bakersfield and the city of Orange, the U.S. Geological Survey said.
Although it was the biggest in SoCal for four years, the USGS said it didn’t heighten concerns of a tsunami.
Only one property suffered minor damage, said Yvonne Menard, spokeswoman for Channel Islands National Park.
"A 5.3 could be damaging if it was right under our feet. It’s right on the edge of being an earthquake that could be dangerous. It’s a reminder that we need to be ready in the future," said John Vidale, director of the Southern California Earthquake Center. "
