Lufthansa cuts Frankfurt to Gatwick route
Lufthansa is cutting less profitable routes from its winter schedule including flights from Frankfurt to Gatwick.
Flights from Frankfurt to Casablanca, Palma and Naples will also be cut.
From April to June, the Group earned an operating profit of 361million euros, nearly making up the loss sustained in the first quarter.
But high fuel costs, price pressure, taxes and fees for emissions all diminished profit.
Overall Lufthansa made an operating loss of 20 million euros in the first half of the year and Simone Menne, chief financial officer warned that "some unpleasant steps" would be necessary to ensure profitable growth.
She said: "By acting systematically, we want to ensure that we can continue to invest for our customers, secure and create jobs for our staff and maintain our profitable growth.
"We cannot avoid taking some unpleasant steps, but they will not comprise quality. The positive earnings performance and the lower unit costs in the second quarter give us confidence that it is worth the effort."
