Brazil’s Lula Rebuffs Biofuels Critics at World Food Summit
Brazil’s president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has confirmed his attendance at the Summit where he will deliver a special address to delegates on 14 May 2009,
The charismatic left wing president is an ardent supporter of Travel & Tourism as an engine for job-creation and the sustainable development of the Brazilian economy.
He has said “Tourism demands great professionalism and competence and should be viewed as essential to the sustainable development that countries need so badly, as a source of wealth and jobs. Tourism can also lift the self-esteem of communities when they see the value to others of their heritage, culture and way of life”
The forum has added an extra session to the Summit Programme entitled ‘Are we really prepared to deal with a pandemic?’ Says the Jean-Claude Baumgarten WTTC President & CEO “History has taught us many important lessons – including the inevitability of pandemics. Travel & Tourism – an activity which is at the very heart of our global society – is directly affected by potential outbreaks. The industry has taken steps to prepare, including efforts to harmonise communications and actions across international borders.”
