Macau introduces subsidised tours for locals

Macau’s new strategy to reboot the local tourism sector has the backing of locals.

A subsidy scheme gives Macau residents the opportunity to go on local tours with funding of MOP280 (US35) allocated to each tour.

Each resident may go on two tours, with the Macau government spending a total of US$35 million on the initiative.

The first day of registration saw big interest in the15 different itineraries available.

"There were 3,135 people who signed up to participate in the ‘Macao Ready Go! Local Tours’ scheme on its opening day," said Ines Chan, an official from the Macao Government Tourism Office.

"Out of the registrants, 40% registered for community tours and 60% for leisure tours."

"Tour guides have or will receive specific training with regards to the current situation prior to the commencement of tours," Chan added.

The scheme kicks off with the first tours starting on June 22.

It will run until September with the aim of boosting the tourism sector and to give locals a better appreciation of their hometown.

Tours include non-gaming visits to casino resorts.

The scheme is organised by MGTO, and handled by member companies affiliated with Macau Travel Agency Association, Association of Macao Tourist Agents and Travel Industry Council of Macau.

It is expected to benefit about 750 local tour guides.
