Majorca blanketed in snow
Spain: Snow chains and bobble hats all the rage on holiday island
The holiday island of Majorca, generally known for its sun, sea and sand, has been blanketed in snow after its third blizzard in the last three weeks.
Snow has been falling on much of mainland Spain and the Balearics during a cold snap that has also seen gale force winds, torrential rain, flooding and landslides.
Many roads in the island’s central zone were impassable yesterday, while drivers have been using snow chains to get around on many of the islands lowland roads. Forecasters say the cold weather will last for at least another few days.
Meanwhile, the situation is not getting any better in eastern parts of the United States, where 30 people are now believed to have died after blizzards that dumped as much as four feet of snow. Much of the north-east has been paralysed by the snow, with many airports including Washington, Baltimore and Philadelphia being closed by the deluge.
Even central New York has been hit by nearly two feet of snow; the blizzards are thought to be among the worst since records began more than 100 years ago.
