Malaysia gets more landing rights in Nepal

NEW DELHI: After two days of bilateral aviation talks in Kathmandu, Malaysia has sealed a deal with Nepal to increase landing rights in the tiny Himalayan kingdom.

Under the revised air service agreement (ASA), Malaysia will now enjoy additional flights, up from the current seven to 21 commercial flights per week.

“There is a huge potential for both countries, especially with about 300,000 Nepali workers in Malaysia,” Malaysian ambassador to Nepal, Datuk Ilankovan Kolandavelu, told Bernama news agency.

“With the two-way trade at nearly RM40 million a year, more Malaysian products are now entering Nepali market and there is a huge potential in terms of tourism and trade between both nations,” he said.

Although no Malaysian carrier is flying to the landlocked country at present, the new ASA, which takes immediate effect, is expected to augur well for national carrier Malaysia Airlines (MAS) and budget carrier AirAsia to expand their services.

The only air link from Kuala Lumpur to Kathmandu is through Royal Nepal Airlines.
