Malaysia government continues support for Formula 1
The Malaysian government will continue to support the Malaysian Formula 1 Grand Prix both for the prestige and the economic impact for trade and tourism.
Recognising the many spin-off industries that have arisen to support Formula 1, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said: "the government acknowledges its importance and relevance, and has decided to continue supporting it."
It has grown in stature and prominence since the inaugural race in 1999 and generates huge exposure for Malaysia tourism, he said.
Formula 1 is considered Malaysia’s most prestigious sporting event and a boon for tourism which extends well beyond the race itself, the Prime Minister said on the eve of race weekend.
"Over 500 million viewers from over 180 countries follow the proceedings on TV, and many more keep track through the print and social media platform."
Sunday’s race was won convincingly by Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel.
