Malaysia launches new domestic airline
Although 2014 was a year to forget for Malaysia’s aviation industry after three high profile accidents, it hasn’t stopped a new upstart from entering the fray.
The country’s latest airline, officially launched yesterday is Flymojo, which will be based in the southern state of Johor Baru.
It will also have a base in Kota Kinabalu in the eastern state of Sabah in Borneo, said deputy transport minister Abdul Aziz Kaprawi.
The privately run airline plans to take flight by early 2016 and has signed a letter of intent to buy 20 Bombardier CS100 planes worth $1.5 billion.
It also has an option for 20 more aircraft.
If the airline firms up the order, it will become the first customer for the C Series aircraft in Asia.
“With Flymojo’s primary hub at Senai International Airport, Johor and secondary hub in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, the airline’s ultra-modern fleet of CS100 aircraft will play a key role in improving connectivity between the Peninsula and Sabah and Sarawak, as well as other parts of the region,” the minister said.
No plans have yet been announced for specific routes and frequencies.
