Man killed on runway after being struck by plane
The US Federal Aviation Administration is investigating a runway incursion following the death of a man at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport.
As a Southwest Airlines aircraft landed on the runway, the pilot alerted air traffic controllers of an ‘unauthorized individual’ trespassing on the runway.
The FAA says the man was likely struck by the plane and was declared deceased at the scene.
Images have been published showing damage to the casing of an engine which is being assessed as the likely point of impact.
Southwest Flight 1392 landed safely, taxied to a gate and all passengers were deplaned safely.
"According to preliminary information, the pilot … reported seeing a person on Runway 17-Right, shortly after the Boeing 737 touched down," the FAA said.
The plane ‘maneuvered to avoid an individual.’
"The aircraft quickly came to a safe stop, and the pilots reported the event to local air traffic controllers," the agency added.
The FAA has launched an investigation into the incident.
