Marriott gets green light for new HQ
Marriott International has got planning department approval to go ahead and build its planned new $600 million headquarters.
Montgomery County Planning Board gave the green light for the downtown Bethesda, MA project which will house about 3,500 employees.
Ground breaking will take place on the site next year and it is slated for a mid-2022 opening.
The site near the Bethesda Metro station is just a short distance from its current HQ.
Marriott confirmed last year it would be staying in Bethesda after Montgomery County offered a multi-million dollar incentive package.
"We do think this is a positive improvement to downtown Bethesda. We think it’s a great project," said Robert Kronenberg, division chief of the county planning department.
Marriott had considered other sites in Washington DC and North Virginia but decided to stay in Bethesda.
The downtown campus will also include a 230-room flagship Marriott Hotel.
