Marriott on Asia expansion drive

Marriott International expects a huge year for growth in Asia, with 19,000 new rooms opening in the region.

Overall this year nearly 80 hotels are slated to open which includes brand debuts for Moxy, which is scheduled to open in Tokyo and the first Delta Hotels property in Shanghai.

That will take to 23 the number of Marriott operated brands in Asia Pacific.

New openings include 16 resorts including The Ritz-Carlton Langkawi, Courtyard by Marriott Siem Reap and the Fiji Marriott Resort Momi Bay.

"2017 is already shaping up to be a great year for Marriott across Asia Pacific. We are looking at nearly 80 new properties slated to open their doors this year, which means an average of two hotels a week from now till the end of the year," said Craig S. Smith, MD and president of Marriott International Asia Pacific.

"With our larger portfolio of individually distinctive brands across destinations, we now provide guests greater access unprecedented choices and unparalleled benefits on their travels whether for business or leisure."

There are currently 550 hotels in operation comprising 170,000 rooms in Asia Pacific and that is expected to almost double by 2021.
