Mary loses her nipple
United States: Embarrassed authorities rename peak after 30 years
The world’s newspapers and online news sites have rushed to publish the strange tale of an American ski resort that has changed the name of one of its mountains after complaints from visitors.
One of the peaks surrounding Grand Targhee Ski and Summer Resort, in Wyoming, has rejoiced in the name of Mary’s Nipple for 30 years – but now the resort’s authorities have decided the mountain should now be known as plain Mary’s.
While the resort waits for the arrival of new signs less likely to cause embarrassment, the word “nipple” has been covered up on existing signs. The resort’s managers say they felt compelled to do something because more and more people said they felt uncomfortable.
According to US newspapers, the name goes back about 30 years to the night a waitress named Mary allegedly streaked through the resort. An observant male bartender is believed to have made a favourable comparison between Mary and the mountain, and the rest is history!
