Mayor’s plea to help tourism operators

An ABC report says that the Devonport Mayor Lyn Laycock says the State Government could be doing more to help tourism operators in the north west recover from the loss of the Spirit Three ferry.

The latest tourism visitors’ survey shows Tasmania had an 8% increase in visitors compared with the same time last year, but visitors arriving on the Spirit of Tasmania ferries dropped by 9% to 127,800 during the past financial year.

Alderman Laycock says the Government could be doing more to help tourism operators in the region who are still suffering from the loss of the Spirit Three.

“The State Government could be putting more money into Tourism Tasmania because what happens here is that every time you talk to somebody, they fly into an airport in Launceston or Hobart because they’re still not sure there’s a very good airport in Devonport and Burnie,” Alderman Laycock said.

“So that is one way they could be assisting and of course that’s a flow-on for everybody, not just tourism operators.”

The Tourism Minister Paula Wriedt says a new tourism plan is being implemented to assist tourist operators in the North-West recover from the loss of the Spirit Three.
