Meetings going south to Mexico
The Mexican Tourism Board is increasingly promoting business and convention travel. The result: a growth spurt in that segment of the market.
Mexico recently went from 27th place in hosting international meetings to 11th place.
“One-third of all US companies that are holding meetings abroad come to Mexico, representing a 27.3% increase in business travel from 2003 to 2004,” said Eduardo Chaillo, director of the Mexico Tourism Board.
Helping to promote the trend is the Mexico Convention Bureau, created two years ago to promote group meetings. Partly through educational efforts, the bureau has helped raise service skills in the industry.
Mexico has also improved its security image, according to tourism officials.
Leisure business has also maintained a brisk pace. There was a 10.5% increase last year in foreign visitors.
