Melbourne and Qatar? Who’s coming clean on green?

MELBOURNE – Mirror, mirror on the wall, who’s the greenest convention centre of them all?

The Melbourne Convention Centre, officially to open next month, made the claim this week that it is the only convention centre in the world to hold a six star, green star environmental rating.

But hold on a minute, no sooner has Melbourne staked its claim for being the queen of green than the Qatar National Convention Centre (QNCC) issued a statement saying that it is ”the first convention and exhibition centre of its kind being built to the premium standard of an internationally-recognised green building rating system”.

And what does all that mean?

QNCC explained, “The 177,000 square metre facility is going for gold in the Leadership in Energy and Environment Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System.

“As the world’s first high-performance green convention centre, it will have state-of-the art systems for water savings, energy efficiency and indoor environmental quality.”

Said QNCC general manager, Paul D’Arcy, “In terms of its environmentally sustainable construction, the venue is on course to achieve Gold Status under the (LEED) Green Building Rating System. To the best of our knowledge it is the first such venue of this nature to achieve such a standard in its entirety.”

The Mole is calling this one a draw, figuring that each convention centre has had its environmental credentials assessed by different rating agencies and that they have both scored maximum greenie points under those systems
