Men’s spa: it’s different

Sunday, 18 May, 2004 0

The new Absolute Spa at Hotel Vancouver is described as Canada’s first men’s spa. So what’s the difference?

“It’s basically an environment that’s going to be more comfortable for men. It’s very similar in services, but there are no flowery smelling products,” Joanne Dunlop, spa manager, told TravelMole.

“Guys love gadgets. We’re trying to create an environment that is very man-friendly with video games and flat screen TV’s. Guys and their buddies can come and watch football games,” she added.

Pedicure chairs have video games and computers where spa-goers can check stock prices or sports scores. Spa suites are larger than normal. The décor is earth tones and metal.

There are also such “manly” features as a barber chair for a hot towel shave.

Other locations of the Absolute Spa, which cater to an upscale clientele that includes Hollywood visitors, are the flagship Absolute Spa at the Century. There’s also one at the Fairmont Vancouver Airport Hotel.

Not only are women also encouraged to use the men’s spa, treatments for couples are being added, according to Ms Dunlop. The male use of spas is increasing virtually everywhere, she said.

One recent study found men the growing segment of men going to spas has reached 29%. Some chains such as Fairmont Hotels & Resorts say men now make up half of their customers.
