Miami Airport posts record passenger traffic for 2016

Miami International Airport posted another record high for passenger traffic in 2016 with nearly 44.6 million travelers.

That represents a modest increase of half a percent, the Miami-Dade Aviation Department said.

Still, it is a positive result considering the big downturn in traffic from Brazil, its largest international market, and Miami’s Zika outbreak.

It was the seventh year in succession MIA has posted record traffic.

"Miami’s continued growth in 2016, especially in the face of severe challenges to tourism locally and throughout our world region, is very encouraging," said Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez.

Brazilian arrivals were down by 30% but increases in other markets helped to offset that.

From August 2016 the airport recorded declining passenger numbers for a four month period at the height of the Zika outbreak.

Overall international passenger traffic grew by nearly one percent to 21.4 million in 2016.
