Miami Beach approves panic buttons for hotel workers
Miami Beach is the latest city to tentatively approve the use of panic buttons for hotel workers.
Miami Beach commissioners agreed the measure this week and final approval could come later this month.
The law would then take effect from January 2019.
It would mandate all hotels to display a sign inside each guest room informing guests that panic buttons are in use.
Chicago, New York and Seattle are among cities which already require panic buttons for housekeeping staff and other hotel employees.
Like those cities Miami Beach wants to create a safe working environment free from sexual and other forms of harassment.
"I heard the statistics out of Chicago; 56% of women who work in hotel rooms were getting sexually harassed," said Miami Beach Commissioner Kristin Rosen Gonzalez who proposed the ordinance.
"I think it will go a long way toward changing behavior and that’s what we wanted to do," Rosen Gonzalez said.
