Miami Beach hotel partially evacuated after carbon monoxide leak
At least nine people were taken to hospital for treatment after being exposed to carbon monoxide at a prominent Miami Beach hotel.
Some guests were evacuated and several rooms were temporary closed off at the Shore Club South Beach Hotel.
It affected about eight rooms close to the hotel’s pump room where the carbon monoxide leak was discovered.
Most of the people affected were hotel workers.
"Employees were transported, all in fair condition, to different hospitals. There were additional people treated and released on the scene. We are doing an investigation," said CJorge Linares, chief of Miami Beach Fire & Rescue.
Traffic on Collins Avenue between 19th and 21st Street was temporarily closed during the evacuation.
Hotel spokesperson Oriane Gurland confirmed an ‘equipment malfunction.’
"With the health and safety of guests and team members in mind, emergency services were called immediately," Gurland told USA TODAY.
"The areas involved were fully operational within a few hours after clearance was provided by the City of Miami Beach."
