Millions of Air India customers were impacted in recent data breach

Thursday, 22 May, 2021 0

Air India said the personal data of millions of customers was compromised in a major hacking data breach.

The airline admitted that names, credit card numbers and passport information were stolen.

AI said it secured the compromised servers and is working with external contractors to beef up its IT security systems.

"We deeply regret the inconvenience caused and appreciate continued support and trust of our passengers," the airline said.

Data was compromised from as many as 4.5 million customers globally.

The data breach saw 10 years’ worth of customer data leaked up to February 2021 through the SITA PSS platform which affected multiple Star Alliance airlines like Air India.

Air India said ‘no subsequent unauthorised activity had been detected.’

SITA said in February 2021 it was targeted by a ‘highly sophisticated attack.’

Although in this case it is a  data breach at a third-party, airlines have been hit with big fines for  lax IT security leading to the breach of millions of customer records.

Cathay Pacific and British Airways have been forced to pay big fines by UK regulators.
