Minister slams dirty airport terminal

JAKARTA – Indonesia’s new Transportation Minister, Freddy Numberi, has blasted the operator of Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta International Airport after an inspection of the terminal.

“It’s such a pity. We’re not a poor country and we have many smart people, so why is it that Soekarno-Hatta’s Terminal I is such a mess?” he told local media.

“Next time, the toilets must be better and cleaner because they will give foreigners a bad first impression of the country.

”If the toilets are dirty, outsiders will think this nation is unclean,” the minister told Antara state news

He said the “messy” management of the airport, namely the unclean toilets and scattered cigarette butts, could reflect the “personality of the nation”.

The Jakarta Post received plenty of feedback to the story, including this post from someone called Jim S.

“Good on the new minister. Toilets, cleanliness, and also the troublesome people trying to grab your bags, get you into certain taxis, plus the taxis trying to rip you off, people standing at the pickup point and grabbing your bag just to lift off the ground then ask for money….boo hoo, get rid of them as well.

“Would be nice to have decent food inside the waiting areas of the terminals as well. And please, why is it that when you arrive here you often have to get on a bus when the plane is parked at the gate…strange!

“But I must say, I’ve been in Indonesia for 12 years now and the airports have improved a lot lately. Haven’t been asked for money by immigration or customs in about 3 or 4 years, it used to be common.

“Yes, I complain about a few things, not because I don’t like it here, I love it here. Just want things to continue to improve.”
