More A380 delays cause Singapore Airlines, Emirates and Qantas grief

Sunday, 15 Jun, 2006 0

While Singapore Airlines has expressed disappointment at the further delays of the delivery of its Airbus A380’s, Emirates say that they think the delay will be longer and Qantas CEO Geoff Dixon, says that Qantas would hold discussions with Airbus in the next two weeks after a thorough internal review of the implications for Qantas of the delay.

Mr Dixon said “Our discussions with Airbus will centre around the new delivery timetable, competitive issues, compensation and possible short-term replacement aircraft.”

He added, “We would hope to alleviate some of the difficulties by deferring the retirement of aircraft, redirecting capacity and securing replacement capacity.”

Airbus has announced that it has informed clients that deliveries of the A380 are to be delayed by six to seven months, due to production issues.

The first A380 aircraft that will be delivered to launch customer Singapore Airlines embarked on its maiden test flight on 7 May 2006, with an SQ logo on its tail.  This aircraft will be the world’s first A380 to enter commercial service at the end of the year.

A Singapore Airlines spokesman responded with the comment, “We are disappointed with the news of further delays but will work with Airbus to minimize the impact.”

They added, ‘We still expect to receive our first A380 by the end of 2006, and this delay will not impact our status as ‘First to Fly’ the A380.’

Airbus said, “While it is still on track to win certification for the aircraft and deliver the first unit at the end of 2006, only a maximum of nine A380 aircraft can be delivered in 2007”, adding, “As a result, compared to the initial targets, there will be shortfalls in delivery of five to nine aircraft in 2008 and around five aircraft in 2009”

Singapore Airlines said it is still discussing the issue of compensation for the delays with Airbus and as reported previously in TravelMole, Emirates is also affected by the delays in the delivery of the A380.
