More air travel misery as DC grinds to a halt
Over 2,000 Monday flights nationwide have once again fallen victim to the latest wintry blast of freezing rain, wind and snow, with more cancellations likely through the day.
Most flights were preemptively scrapped Sunday with the nation’s capital hardest hit so far.
Washington’s three major airports reported at least 40% of today’s flights grounded and up to a foot of snow expected later today.
At Reagan National airport alone, over 500 flights were hit.
Federal offices in the Washington DC area will stay closed for non-essential workers and scheduled votes in US House of Representatives and Senate have also been put on hold due to the storm.
It was a similar story at Philadelphia with 35% of flights grounded for today, according to live flight tracking website Flightaware.com.
Even in Florida the impact has been felt with nearly 5% of all services out of Orlando, Fort Lauderdale and Miami cancelled.
However New York, so often at the sharp end of this winter’s storms so far, is expected to escape heavy snowfall this time, although the morning commute from New Jersey could be affected by icy roads.
On the rails, Amtrak said it would operate a limited snow schedule with fewer services running on the Acela Express and Northeast regional lines.
