More carriers ban use of Galaxy Note 7s

A number of Asian airlines have added their name to the growing list refusing to carry new Samsung Galaxy Note 7 smartphones in checked luggage.

Taiwan’s two biggest airlines China Airlines and EVA Airways have advised passengers not to charge phones or store them in checked baggage.

It follows last week’s US Federal Aviation Administration directive ‘strongly advising’ passengers not to use their Note 7 phones during flights, or place in checked-in bags.

Singapore Airlines has also joined the Taiwanese carriers in banning their use in the cabin, along with other carriers such as Garuda Indonesia, Thai Airways and Royal Brunei Airlines.

"The powering up and charging of Samsung Galaxy Note 7 mobile phones is prohibited on all our flights," a Singapore Air spokesman said.

Australian airlines Qantas, Jetstar and Virgin Australia have also forbidden use of the new smartphone aboard flights.

Samsung Electronics announced a global recall of all handsets after reports some devices exploded while being charged.
