More corporate travel booked online

Nearly half of all corporate travel is being booked on the internet.

According to GetThere, which provides online travel reservation systems, 43% of employee trips made in the second quarter of this year were booked online, up from 24% for the same period last year.

According to GetThere, the motivation for this increase in online bookings is cost savings. The survey showed that 89% of companies were paying 42% less on travel agency fees for trips booked online. GetThere’s president, Jeff Palmer said: “While most companies have had to reduce travel spending, many are strategically using online technology to reduce the cost of travel rather than purely eliminating trips”.

Figures produced by an internet research firm, comScore, corroborate these figures, reporting that travel sites in the US made $701 million worth of sales in the week ending July 21, up 46% from the same week last year. comScore’s figures were compiled from leisure and business travel made on major US travel sites.

GetThere’s figures were compiled from responses to a survey sent out to it’s customers globally.
