Stabbing undermines efforts to promote island destination as family resort

The much-maligned Cypriot resort of Ayia Napa is once again in the news for the wrong reasons following the stabbing of a DJ outside a nightclub.

Eighteen-year-old Dylan Mills, known as Dizzee Rascal in the garage music movement popular in the resort, was dragged from his moped and stabbed repeatedly in the back, chest and buttocks.

There have been suspicions that the stabbing could have been linked to the London music collective, So Solid Crew, which arrived on the island several hours earlier. So Solid Crew was due to perform at one of the island’s most popular nightclubs, Club Ice. One member of the group was arrested and questioned but has been released without charge.

As reported by News From Abroad over the last two years, Ayia Napa’s authorities have been anxious to disassociate the island with the clubbing scene, and want to re-promote it as a family resort. There as been a crackdown on drug use, with several people jailed for relatively minor offences last year.
