MP’s call for pilots’ breath tests
UK: Matter will be brought up in House of Commons this week
An MP has called for airline pilots to be subject to random breath tests “to assure passengers they are safe”. Following a report in last week’s Telegraph Travel pages, the Labour MP Louise Ellman stated that the subject was a “matter for great concern” and she would be bringing the subject up in the House of Commons this week. She told the newspaper: “Passengers need to have the assurance that the pilot is in full control of the plane. If random tests are needed to do that, then I would support it.” One pilot this week told Birmingham’s Sunday Mercury newspaper that he had grave concerns about the problem of air crew drinking while on duty, adding that for every pilot caught drinking there were “probably another 60 or 70 getting away with it”. The pilot’s union BALPA has come out against random testing, saying it would be unsuccessful, adding that the system of “peer intervention” used in the United States is more effective.
