MS Nordnorge will continue her journey to Antarctica as scheduled after a successful rescue operation of 154 passengers and crew onboard MV Explorer who hit the ice in Antarctica on Friday.

MS Nordnorge, a Norwegian vessel belonging to Hurtigruten Group received a message for assistance from MV Explorer on Friday the 23rd November in Antarctica and travelled to her rescue.

MS Nordnorge took all of MV Explorers passengers and crew onboard and continued her journey to King George Island to Frei Marsh, a Chilean town with an airbase and a permanent civilian community where the passengers and crew of MV Explorer disembarked.

The rescue operation was successful and no injuries of passengers or crew members have been reported.

MS Nordnorge has a maximum capacity of 691 passengers and is currently carrying fewer than 300 passengers making it trouble-free to accommodate all of MV Explorers’ passengers and crew onboard. The weather conditions were quite good, albeit cold.

MS Nordnorge had just arrived in Antarctica when she received the distress message. The incident caused a slight disruption to her itinerary and she will be able to fulfil most of her planned itinerary in Antarctica. There are currently two Australian passengers on board MS Nordnorge.

MS Nordnorge will sail to Ushuaia as planned and pick up new passengers for the 30th of November sailing and travel as planned to Antarctica and the Chilean Fjords.

All other scheduled departures for the season of 2007/2008 will continue as planned.
